Immunology

Immunologa1Our clinic deals with the recognition and treatment of immune system dysfunctions. This includes the disease patterns based on hypersensitivity reactions, namely allergies, different acquired or congenital immunodeficiency diseases and autoimmune diseases.

Our immune system protects our body from diseases by being able to recognise and distinguish own, changed own and foreign materials from the outside. The protection mechanism starts with a so-called antigen recognition, to which the immune system reacts by producing antibodies. The meeting of the two materials induces the reaction. All this is the task of the different types of leukocytes. Immunology, as a discipline of medicine, deals with the functioning, diseases of our protective system and their treatment.

The task of clinical immunology is to recognise and treat a malfunctioning immune system. This includes mainly three disease groups: 1. autoimmune diseases, 2. various acquired or congenital immunodeficiencies (immune deficiency) and 3. diseases based on hypersensitivity reaction, i.e. allergy.

The first group contains classic autoimmune diseases. These are the SLE, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren syndrome, polymyositis, scleroderma or progressive systemic sclerosis, vasculitis, autoimmune liver diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn disease, colitis ulcerosa).  The thing these diseases have in common is that the functioning of the immune system is aimed against the own cells and tissues of the body for some reason.

Diseases of the second group develop by contrast typically due to any hypofunctionality of the immune system and are mainly secondary infectious diseases.

Allergic diseases include respiratory allergies (hay fever, asthma bronchiale), dermatological diseases (atopic dermatitis, urticaria) and food allergies.

These diseases are not easy to detect, establishment of the diagnosis often requires specialist consultation and its evidencing requires special blood tests.

Having regard to the diagnostic difficulties of the above diseases and to their especially increasing commonness (allergic diseases affect 20% of the population!), our specialist clinic offers in detail examination, treatment and control of these diseases, in line with the latest recommendations of the Professional Board.
